Why isn’t doing great work enough? Because visibility matters too!

A reflection on 10 years in business

Ten years in business feels like a milestone worth celebrating, but it also prompts a certain amount of reflection.

When Charlotte and I (Michelle) started the business, we had the same optimism most founders have. We were confident in our expertise, excited by the opportunities ahead and convinced that if we worked hard enough and delivered great results, success would naturally follow.

A decade later, we’ve learned a lot about business growth, client relationships and what it really takes to build a sustainable company.

The good news is that we’ve had the privilege of working with some fantastic clients and an incredible team. We’ve supported organisations through periods of growth, change and uncertainty, built long-term partnerships and earned the trust of business owners who continue to come back to us year after year.

Looking back, we’re proud of what we’ve achieved. At the same time, anniversaries have a habit of making you ask difficult questions. Not about whether the business has been successful, but whether we’ve always focused on the right things to achieve the growth we wanted.

That’s the question we’ve found ourselves returning to recently.

The myth that great work speaks for itself

For a long time, we believed that if we focused on delivering excellent service, looking after clients, being reliable, honest and consistent, everything else would follow naturally.

To some extent, it has. But only to some extent.

One of the biggest lessons of the last 10 years is that great work alone doesn’t guarantee visibility. People can’t work with you if they don’t know you exist. They can’t recommend expertise they’ve never seen, and they can’t buy into your story if you’ve never told it.

The funny thing is that helping businesses communicate their value is part of what we do every day. We help organisations articulate what makes them different, build credibility and tell their stories effectively.

Yet, we’ve never been particularly good at telling our own.

The partnership behind Morton Waters

If you know Charlotte and me, you’ll know we often talk about how we met and the agencies we worked at before starting the business. Those experiences shaped the way we think, the way we work and the partnership at the heart of everything we do.

Over the years we’ve solved countless problems, navigated difficult conversations, celebrated successes, made mistakes and kept moving forward. We’ve even picked up a few awards along the way. We bring different strengths to the business, but together we’ve built something we’re genuinely proud of.

Of course, none of this is down to the two of us alone.

We’ve been fortunate to work with an incredible team over the years. People who care deeply about the work, challenge us when needed, go the extra mile and help create the culture we’re proud of today. Their contribution has been fundamental to everything we’ve achieved.

Stepping out from behind the work

What we haven’t done particularly well is talk about those achievements.

We’ve always been more comfortable delivering the work than promoting it. Client service has naturally taken priority over marketing ourselves, and self-promotion has never come easily.

That’s something we’re actively trying to change.

One of the positive steps we’ve taken recently has been becoming members of the Uckfield Chamber of Commerce. Since joining, we’ve started attending networking events and have been genuinely impressed by how welcoming and supportive everyone has been. Building connections locally has reminded us that networking isn’t about selling, it’s about relationships, shared experiences and becoming part of a wider business community. Thank you to everyone I’ve met so far.

It’s also reinforced something we’ve preached to clients for years! Visibility matters.

You don’t have to be the loudest voice in the room, but you do need to be present. You need to share your expertise, contribute to conversations and give people the opportunity to understand who you are and how you can help.

Looking ahead

As we reach our tenth anniversary, that’s perhaps our biggest lesson.

The answer isn’t to become something we’re not, it’s simply to get better at sharing what we’ve spent the last decade building.

Our values won’t change. Our commitment to our clients won’t change. The way we work won’t change. But perhaps we’ll stop being such a well-kept secret.

This is the challenge we’ve set ourselves: to keep doing work we’re proud of and become a little better at talking about it.

So, you’ll be hearing a bit more from us.

If we haven’t crossed paths at a Chamber event yet, please feel free to get in touch. Whether you’d like to discuss a specific challenge or simply introduce yourself, I’d be delighted to have a conversation.
