As we step into a brand-new year, all of us at Uckfield Logistics Training Services (ULTS) would like to wish the Uckfield business community a happy and successful 2026.

This year also marks the start of something new for us. Over the coming months, we’ll be sharing a series of regular blogs offering a light-hearted but informative insight into the changes happening across the transport and driver training world – and, more importantly, what they mean for you.

Because whether you drive a car to work, operate a van for your business, or spend your days behind the wheel of an HGV, forklift truck or crane, changes are coming that will affect everyone who holds a UK driving licence. And some of those changes have already begun.

Driving licence changes

One key area many people aren’t yet fully aware of is driving licence conditions, particularly for drivers aged 60 and over.

New expectations around medical conditions, mandatory eyesight checks and self-declaration requirements are already being introduced. These are designed to improve safety on our roads, but they also place more responsibility on individual drivers to stay informed and compliant.

For businesses across Uckfield and the surrounding areas, this is especially important. If your staff drive as part of their role – even just a company car or van – changes to licence conditions and driver compliance can have implications for insurance, duty of care and operational continuity.

Van drivers will also start to see tighter compliance expectations, with clearer distinctions between private and commercial use and increased scrutiny around training, health and vehicle operation.

And, as the UK gradually moves towards a digital driving licence system for everyone, with full rollout expected by 2027, all drivers will be expected to manage their licence details online through the DVLA. This includes keeping personal and medical information up to date, something many people don’t realise is already their responsibility.

Keeping you updated

Don’t worry though, we’ll keep you updated on government expectations and what you need to do, so you can keep yourself and your business on track.

Through these regular blogs and our social media updates, we’ll break down what’s changing, when it’s happening and what practical steps you may need to take – all in plain English, with a bit of humour along the way.

If you’d rather these updates land straight in your inbox, you can also sign up to our free monthly newsletter, which pulls together the key points you need to know, without the jargon.
