Looking after your health is so important but is still over looked by many. The government recommends that we exercises at least 150 minutes (2 ½ hours) per week for personal health benefits. But despite this recommendation, a number of people still don’t seem to realise that regular activity has significant benefits for your mental and physical health.

Pupils that were active at school playing competitive sports tend to stay active as they age but non-active pupils tend to stay inactive unless a serious life event dictates a change.

Studies show that around 1 in 3 (34%) men and 1 in 2 (42%) women in the UK are not physically active enough for good health (gov.uk).  We are around 20% less active than in the 1960s, and if current trends continue, it will be around 35% less active by 2030 (gov.uk). Technology has a part to play in all of this but we still have to be mindful and try to incorporate regular physical activity into our lives, so we can reap the multitude of health benefits, and improve our overall quality of life.

Mental health is so current and is taken far more seriously, especially now post pandemic. Poor mental health can be debilitating for any business if not properly addressed. Stress is part of day-to-day life and the way we mange our stress levels is crucial both personally and from a business perspective.

A study in 2019 across business sectors, found a productivity loss of £92Bn (Vitality Health, Cambridge University, Rand Europe, Mercer) this was due to sickness, absence and presenteeisum. Three-quarters (75%) of this cost was due to mental health issues and poor lifestyle choices. Both of which can be easily addressed with companies offering their employees engaging wellbeing initiatives.  Studies show that employee health and wellbeing has intrinsic links to productivity and companies that not only prioritise it, but also properly consider how they engage their employees to improve their mental and physical health can see a productivity increase by as much as 40% (Vitality Health).

There are many factors in the workplace that can contribute to increased stress and anxiety. But having appropriate strategies in place can help alleviate theses issues. A healthy workforce will have a better attendance rate, reduced sickness costs and increased productivity.  A more productive workforce will bring obvious benefits to your business. So it pays to encourage your workforce to be healthier.
