Uckfield Heritage is the new name for Uckfield & District Preservation Society (UDPS). We feel the new name better reflects what we do – the Society looks after Uckfield’s heritage. How do we do that? In two ways.
First, we maintain two splendid, listed buildings, Nutley Windmill and Bridge Cottage. Nutley Windmill is open to visitors on Summer Sunday afternoons, while volunteers work there on most Wednesday mornings throughout the year. Bridge Cottage was built in 1436. It hosts concerts, local history talks and markets, while also providing meeting rooms that can be hired by local organisations and businesses. Secondly, we have a substantial local history archive. This is housed in Bridge Cottage, although space is fast running out!
As well as changing our name, we are busy equipping and stocking a new shop, which provides a source of income to support the work of Uckfield Heritage. The new shop is in Bell Walk, very close to Bridge Cottage itself. It offers more space than the old premises, both for sales and for storage and preparation of donations. It should also be more convenient for people to donate items. We look forward to welcoming all existing and new customers to the new shop when we open on Monday 6 November.
