Saxons are taking over Bridge Cottage on 17 May – Uckfield Heritage will join forces with Uckfield Bonfire & Carnival Society to bring a taste of Saxon life to Bridge Cottage.  Some of the costumes and shields you have seen in the Carnival procession will be on view, and members will help you understand more about the Saxon times. This period in English history lasted some 650 years, from about 410 until 1066, and it ended long before Bridge Cottage itself was built.

The Saxons will be in the Cottage from 10-00 to 3-00 on Saturday 17 May, so we look forward to seeing Chamber members some time on that day.

In late June we have an exhibition planned, based on the railway in Uckfield, which will be linked to the national Railway 200 celebrations, and we are looking for local involvement in that event.  There are two areas where Chamber members might be able to help.

First, did you or your relatives have a link with Uckfield station, or trains from Uckfield.  You may have a relative who worked at the station, or perhaps the line represented the start of a significant journey – a gap year, or a major holiday.  Do you know someone who was born on the train?  Did you or a relative travel to Lewes or beyond from Uckfield, before the line closed in 1969?

Secondly, while the exhibition is open our volunteers will be acting as stewards in the Cottage.  We are always looking for people to help with this.  You don’t need any knowledge of Bridge Cottage, or of railways for that matter, but if you can help us, we would be extremely grateful.
