We kicked off our 2026 programme of events in style, with our bi-monthly members’ meeting, held at the Civic Centre.

The Luxford Restaurant was buzzing with plenty of familiar faces and lots of new ones too. Guests were welcomed with canapés and the chance to mingle, catch up and make new connections before the formal part of the evening began.

First was an update from Chamber President Chris Dowling. He shared what’s been happening at the Chamber and what members can look forward to during the year ahead.

We then heard from Karen Bedwell, Mayor of Uckfield, who gave an informative overview of the Civic Centre and the many ways it supports the local community.

One of the highlights for the Civic Centre this year will be the 10th anniversary of Weald on the Field, which takes place on 8 August. It promises to be an extra-special event and Karen touched on all the ways that the local community can get involved, such as sponsorship and running a stall.

It was a great reminder of just how much goes on in and around Uckfield, and how these events help bring people into the town and support local businesses.

New members

We were delighted to welcome a number of new members to the Uckfield Chamber, some of whom attended the meeting. And they were given the opportunity to introduce themselves and their business.

A warm welcome to:

  • Michelle Wallis – Michelle Wallis Candid Photography
  • Michelle Morton – Morton Waters Communications
  • Matt & Laura May – Dropped Pin

These quick-fire introductions are always a favourite and a great way to put faces to names.

Guest speaker

Our guest speaker for the evening was Katy Bourne OBE, Sussex Police & Crime Commissioner and the longest-serving commissioner in the country, with 13 years in the role.

Katy shared her personal journey, including her background as a business owner running a dance company, and her lifelong connection to Sussex. She explained her role as the elected voice for residents and businesses on policing, including setting budgets and priorities, and holding the Chief Constable to account.

Business crime was a key focus of her talk and Katy shared how Sussex was one of the first areas in the country to introduce a dedicated business crime unit. This has led to increased reporting and a rise in solved crimes.

She also touched on upcoming changes to local government, including the introduction of a mayoral role in 2028. While Uckfield Town Council will remain, it’s likely that Wealden District Council and East Sussex County Council will cease. The future mayor will have a strong focus on the economy, with powers spanning housing, transport, the environment, as well as police and fire services.

Uckfield Business Awards – save the date

Members were also reminded to mark their calendars for the Uckfield Business Awards, which are set to take place on 1 October.

The event is a fantastic opportunity to celebrate the brilliant businesses across Uckfield and the surrounding area.

Chamber Director Ian Noble reminded the room about the sponsorship opportunities for the awards, and also asked people to consider which categories they would enter their business in. The awards open in April.

Upcoming events

At the end of the meeting, before a delicious buffet was served, Ian touched on some of the upcoming Chamber events that are now available to book. These include:

There’s lots coming up for Chamber members, with plenty of opportunities to get involved. See you at the next event.
