It was back to school for Chamber members this month, as our September meeting took place at Uckfield College.

There were a few changes from our school days, though. The PTA ran a bar so members could enjoy a glass of wine or soft drink while networking before the formalities began.

Chamber updates

Gathered in one of the College’s lecture theatres, more than 50 members had the chance to catch up on what’s been happening in and around Uckfield, as well as hear what’s coming up for the Chamber between now and the end of the year.

On behalf of our President, Chris Dowling (who sent his apologies), Margaret Dode-Angel delivered the President’s Report. We have had several new members recently and a couple took the opportunity to introduce themselves to the group.

Chamber Director, Ian Noble outlined a busy calendar of events, including our upcoming Disability Confident Breakfast on 31 October. And while Christmas may feel a way off, planning is well underway for Uckfield’s Late Night Shopping event on 5 December, organised by the Chamber.

College collaborations

As our host for the evening, Uckfield College Principal Sara Marshallsay gave members an update on the school’s progress and achievements since our last visit a year ago.

We also heard from Jeremy Kerswell of Plumpton College, who spoke about their work, successes, and recent collaboration with Uckfield College.

And to round things off, Stephanie Aguilera, Aspirations Leader at Uckfield College, shared ways in which local businesses can engage with the College to help shape employability skills in the next generation of workers.

After the meeting, members moved to the canteen area for some informal networking over a buffet dinner provided by the College. Thankfully, it wasn’t like the school dinners we remember – there was no lumpy mash or skin-on custard in sight!

Next lesson

Our next members’ meeting will be on Tuesday 12 November, hosted in Screen 2 of the Picture House Cinema. And then afterwards, members will head across to the Picture House Restaurant for a burger supper.
